INTRODUCTION
Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in India's Western Ghats. They lie 1,200 m above sea level on Ambukutty Mala, near an ancient trade route connecting the high mountains of Mysore to the ports of the Malabar coast. Edakkal caves translates to 'a stone in between ' as it look like a huge boulder wedged between two bigger stones and is 96feet along and has a width of 22 feet. One can reach the edakkal caves only by trekking up the Ambukutty hills. History says that the edakkal cave was first discovered by Fred Fawcett during his hunting trip to Wayanad in 1890.Fred Fawcett was then the superintendent of police of the Malabar district. And he further discovered that the caves were the habitat of the Neolithic people.
Edakkal is the only known place in India with Stone Age carvings. We can see here carvings belonging to Neolithic and Mesolithic age. The human figures of these caves have raised hair and some have masks. They all have archeological significance and are interesting too. Along with these pictorial carvings, we can also watch Tamil and Brahmi Script in Edakkal caves.
The Edakkal Caves are famous for their paintings of figures: human, animals, symbols and letters. These paintings are believed to date back to the 6000 BC. The etchings and prehistoric line drawings are a testament to the culture and lives of those who lived in the caves years ago.
